Becoming a Member

The Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department is always looking for new members. As our name indicates, we are a volunteer organization that functions because your neighbors volunteer their time to provide you with fire protection and emergency medical first response.

Have you ever thought about serving in this capacity? Several of our members are not firefighters as a primary career; they work regular jobs and volunteer their time. Many joined the department with no experience, but with a desire to serve their community.

Listed below are the requirements and benefits of becoming a member.

BECOMING A MEMBER

The Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department accepts applications for both Part-Time Paid Firefighter/EMT and for volunteer members on a regular basis. If you are interested, please fill out the attached application and submit it to the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department or fill out the online application. Applications may be submitted via email to Asst. Chief Hans Speck at hspeck@waxhawvfd.org, mailed to Waxhaw VFD 3500 Waxhaw Pkwy Waxhaw, NC 28173, or hand-delivered to Station 18 located at 3500 Waxhaw Parkway.

Requirements for Full or Part-Time Paid Positions are as follows:

1. Must be 18 years old
2. Must have a valid North Carolina Class B or higher driver’s license or a South Carolina Class E within six months of hire date.
3. Must submit to a background check
4. Must be a certified North Carolina Firefighter
5. Must be a certified North Carolina EMT
6. Must be certified to the North Carolina Hazardous Material – Operations Level
7. Must be checked off on all apparatus or must be checked off within 18 months of hire date
8. Must submit to a pre-employment drug testing and random drug testing throughout employment
9. Career shifts are a 48/96 rotation and part-time members must work a minimum of 3 shifts per month

Compensation:

1. Beginning pay is $14.50 per hour for part-time members and $37,362.00 annually for career members
2. The department provides the following insurance benefits:
a. An Accident and Sickness policy for injuries/illnesses that occurs while on duty with Waxhaw to offset the lost revenue from your primary job
b. $50,000 life insurance policy for active members
3. Career members are provided with Health, Vision, and Dental Insurance
4. Line of Duty Death benefits provided by the State and Federal Government

Requirements for Volunteer Positions are as follows:

1. Must be 18 years old;
2. Must submit to a background check;
3. Must submit to a pre-acceptance drug test and random drug testing throughout membership;
4. Be a certified NC FF or EMT or equivalent or the desire to obtain certification as a FF, EMT, or preferably both;
5. Attend monthly training and meet minimum participation requirements as outlined in the General Orders;

Benefits for Volunteers:

1. Once certified, volunteers become eligible for incentive pay for staffing the station, responding to calls, and attending training;
2. The department provides Workers Compensation and an Accident and Sickness policy for injuries/illnesses that occurs while on duty with Waxhaw to offset the lost revenue from your primary job;
3. The department provides a $50,000 life insurance policy for active volunteer members;
4. Line of Duty Death benefits provided by the State and Federal Government;
5. NC Firefighters Association Pension for those who maintain minimum training and participation requirements;
